Before we embark on any new project, Brikama Society does an extensive on the ground research and multiple meetings with Brikama Health Center Officials to ensure thorough research is done, and that funds go to only viable projects.
The maternal and child health services section has been our latest interest given the urgent need to enhance its service delivery system. The maternal mortality rate is very high in The Gambia. According to United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund UNICEF, the maternal mortality rate in the Gambia is estimated at 730/100,000 live births. There is an extreme insufficiency in medical equipment and staffing resources. According to the regional principal nurse officer, the Brikama Health Center performs about 5000 deliveries per year, and there is an extreme shortage of bed space and medical supplies.
